INDIAN HEAD ROCK, STEVE SHAFFER, AND KENTUCKY TAX DOLLARS AT WORK.

Indian Head Rock Face.
It all started when Steve Shaffer took a rock out of of the Ohio river. It wasn't just any rock. It was called Indian Head rock and has archaeologically significant carving on it from Indians and later from those who visited the rock. The Kentucky Government had treated it like any rock by leaving it in the river when the river was dammed a hundred years ago and the rock was submerged. There has been no move by Kentucky to retrieve the rock, which they claim is on their side of the river. The submersion threatened to destroy the carvings.
So, interested in finding out if the rock was really there or not, Steve Shaffer, a Ohio citizen, dove for the rock and once he found it, took the eight ton boulder back to Ohio. Kentucky state Rep. Reginald Meeks decided that this was an outrageous theft and launched criminal charges against Shaffer. Later the suit was tried in Shaffer's favor but Kentucky had already launched another suit against him, this time a civil suit. Meeks actually went as far as writing a resolution over the issue. The fiasco has gone so far that Kentucky is suing not only Shaffer, but the the city of Portsmouth, former Portsmouth Mayor Gregory Bauer, and another diver for the rock David Vetter in the process. They are using the claim that the rock was removed from an archaeological site without a permit. An archaeological site?

Woman on Indian Head Rock circa 1903.
For a first point, if it is so important that the stone is entrenched in it's original setting, why the heck was a dam installed below it? The river being damned and submerging the rock is NOT the natural setting of this site. Either the rock was significant enough to preserve the archaeological setting, or it was not. From the fact that the dam is there, it apparently was not. A preserved archaeological site is NOT normally, if ever, flooded.
The state knew this rock was there, so wouldn't leaving it to be destroyed by a man-made site development be criminal negligence on their part? The natural archaeological site no longer exists. It is not rare that historical buildings are re-located when leaving them on the original site is no longer a viable option. I once worked for a company which was required to move a historical building when they developed the site. Wouldn't a rock fall under the same jurisdiction of preserving historical markers?
Another outrage is that now that someone has taken a move to see the boulder preserved, Kentucky wants it back but has made an attempt to steal it from the person who footed the bill to move it to safety. This is the theft. Kentucky is outraged enough that the boulder was removed from their state but never made one damned attempt on their own to pay to have it retrieved for posterity. Now they expect that they should just be able to "send the thugs out" after someone to get it back after a century of neglect which showed their indifference to this rock.
Kentucky, during a time that many of its citizens are dwelling in absurd third world poverty conditions has decided that they will spend their taxpayer's money on a lawsuit over this rock. The rock they showed not one whit of interest in until it was retrieved and made an easy target after someone did their preservation work for them.
It makes one wonder exactly how far our government plans to go to claim ownership of anything and everything on this continent. True, we do need some laws to preserve the archaeological finds for posterity. But when is enough enough? When does it become okay for a citizen to take what archaeological societies have allowed to be ignored or would have never have found at all had it not been for the people who take their own time and skill to find? One would think that a full century of neglect would qualify this piece as one that would be up for grabs to anyone taking the time and effort to remove it. One would also think that the finder would have rights to charge a fee for whatever it is they find that the government wants. You can be sure that there would be plenty of tax money involved in their own endeavor to go find the things themselves that they lay claim to.
One can only hope that the Judge who presides over the coming civil suit trial this May 11th will have a little more common sense than the Kentucky official who has maintained this fiasco. This whole array of Kentucky fried fiasco has me wondering if Kentucky is being run by crooks, idiots, or some new breed of hybred. Idiooks? Croots?

ARCHAEOLOGY

WHAT ARE THEY HIDING? AND WHY?
Not too long ago the population of the world was duped into believing that global warming was a result of high levels of C02, a hoax which politicians worldwide had hoped would reap them not only mounds of cash - but that people would gladly hand over the funds in an effort to save their planet. They got caught at their own game. Hackers were able to get into University emails and release proof that the global warming farce was nothing more than a lucrative con game. The resultant "Climategate" taught the people we need to keep science ahead of politics at all costs.
But what about other areas of science........take archaeology, for instance.
Through the years I have talked to scientists and explorers alike. Here and there I have heard remarks that made me cock my head in appropriate RCA dog fashion. "What was THAT all about" became a usual question. Being a busy person, though, I often would think about what I heard and then just file it away and go on with my work.
Recently, I came across a rant online about the cover-up of findings in the Grand Canyon area that revealed the existence of Egyptian cultures here in America thousands of years ago. The public got a whiff of the findings in a newspaper article back in 1909, but no information has been revealed about these findings since. Subsequent findings since that time have been completely kept from public knowledge.
To start this story, my partner, Indy (Robert Velare) found an interesting and informational rant that delved into an old story about an explorer, G.E. Kinkaid, finding a cave and an obviously man-made pyramid in the Grand Canyon. The expedition had been funded by Professor S.A. Jordan of the Smithsonian Institute. It was later called a hoax. No record of Kinkaid can now be found at the Smithsonian. But was it just a hoax? Further investigations have found a lot of evidence that this expedition really took place, and findings really exist.
You can read the full article here:
http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/bizarre/news-egyptians-arizona
Interestingly enough we were able to find this site which states:
Up until now there has been quite a debate as to whether G. E. Kincaid actually existed. There have been no records of his work, nor any proof from the Smithsonian he was actually involved with them. Many have proposed the newspaper article was an "April Fools Day" joke! The only possible proof might be the "other" article mentioned in the Arizona Republic article which presented the story. Finding the proof was difficult, but not impossible. Here, shown below for the first time in almost 100 years is the "first article" from 1909, a full month before the legendary 1909 Arizona Republic article was published. As you can see, G.C. Kincaid's expedition occurred as reported! We have also found other articles offering further evidence the story is real. You can read this entire story along with clips of the original news articles at:Furthermore, an ancient manuscript (translated) has been located. Parts of the content describes a voyage made thousands of years ago by a group from Asia traveling to a city located at a place they called "The Canyon of Light". Their journey made with the intention of visiting a holy man, or a shrine. Incredibly, the location and descriptions given seem to point towards the area we are currently exploring at the Grand Canyon! Interestingly enough as well, the pyramid can still be viewed at the Grand Canyon (with no explanation of its existence) and the cave can still be seen....but, of course, access is not allowed.

Further maps and discussions about an expedition to follow Kinkaid's expedition route in the Grand Canyon can be found at this site:
http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/esp_orionzone_9.htm
Now, all this information could seem quite incredible and "conspiracy theorist" tasting to the average trusting American, but after years of writing newsletters, I can't think of this bit of information as extraordinary in the least. In the last few years, I have had communications with many in the field and this sort of thing seems to be more of the usual event rather than a once-in-awhile occurrence.
If we look back on the discovery of the San Salvador treasure discovered by Don Patterson of Old Charter, it becomes clear that it's not just discoveries that go against the grain of "approved" historical views that lead to hiding or stealing our history. Sometimes it's just plain good old money that motivates governments and scientific organizations to keep our heritage from us.
The treasure found in San Salvador had nothing to do with uncovering a past that would have gone against the grain of what we have been taught to believe about the human past on the planet. It was thought to merely be an exceptionally lucrative cache of the pirate John Watley from a few hundred years ago. There was no secret Watley existed. Finding what could have been his booty had nothing to do with changing our view of history or our time lines for how our species progressed. It was merely a huge chunk of valuable gems and gold. Don has long asserted that the permits were all in accordance, but when it came to excavation of this treasure, the San Salvador government stepped in to stop the work. He claims millions were spent in defense, and to this date, Don and staff have not been able to gain permission to dig what they rightfully found, even though the government would have had control of the findings. Now, it's true that this whole story could be a bluff because there is no public evidence to support the claims.......but when court battles are involved, there is always a means to find records of the battle. We can presume that when the court becomes involved with heisting someone's discovery, that the courts aren't making a big fuss about taking over control of a "hoax".
Odyssey Marine also went through a similar ruckus. You can read about that battle in previous issues of the Gazette. The people that find the treasures are often left with no consideration - the people with the power want it ALL. Period. What we get, if we get ANYTHING, is a brief note that the findings were what they were thought to be or that the whole story was a "fabrication" or "hoax".
I, at one time, was able to acquire photos for the Gazette from someone who was being "asked" by the Smithsonian to turn the photos over to them. The Smithsonian did not agree that they should be paying for the photos. He was expected to just turn them over for free. You would think that a society that has become as powerful and lucrative as the Smithsonian might just offer a bit of a "finders fee" for the privilege of owning what they take. Not so.
Another explorer/Archaeologist has claimed that once turning over an 8 foot tall skeleton to the Smithsonian, the artifact disappeared never to be seen or heard of again. Shortly after talk of findings of giants started getting louder than a dull roar, photo-shopped pictures of skeletons so huge that their heads alone were the size of full grown men and suddenly talk of a race of very large humans disintegrated into the world of "hoaxes". One can't help but wonder if these pictures were the result of someone actually just playing a prank to see how many would bite or if they were scams which were carefully placed to quell the growing buzz about actual findings. Now that the public has become familiar with these obvious shams, if you mention evidence of a large race of people, most others will automatically assume you are of the "nutcase" variety of thinker.
In one other conversation I was told: At one time we found artifacts, symbols, gold in Wyoming at over 10 feet deep using his equipment, and the finders were merely told by the University to which they took the findings that it was impossible for them to find those items there, they shouldn't have been there". The artifacts were subsequently melted down after all attempts to verify them were completely thwarted and these vital pieces of our past were lost forever because we are not allowed to go beyond the "official" view of our past. Perhaps the scientists wouldn't verify them, but those that dug them up weren't clueless about where they found them, whether or not they SHOULD have been there or not.
After much back and forth with an experienced explorer about allowing me to print information about one specific discovery, I was told that it couldn't be reported because "If I released pictures and names- I would be hounded and it would never end. Print around what I have said." Unfortunately, having to print around what had been said didn't leave much of a story to tell.
If this were an uncommon occurrence one could just pass it off as a good story and giving it little credence. After hearing the "this is off the record" enough times, and from almost EVERY person involved with archaeological discovery that I have talked to in the attempt to bring interesting news to the public, I'd be completely subconscious not to start to get the drift of how things work in the field of archaeology - and I've gotten quite the clue very strongly that things aren't much different from science to science than they were in the Climatology field which we saw finally unfold into the "Climategate" incident. Once a person with power in the field has publicly spoken on how things are - you do NOT go against that view or you will not have a career. They are jealous enough about their own wallets and glory to be willing to sacrifice anyone else's to keep it.
After years of acquaintance and chat with Bob Fitzgerald, a professional treasure hunter (www.treasurenow.com), I have been privy to many recoveries made with his machines. What he has to say about the whole issue though is that "while skeptics abound- treasure is still being found no matter what the skeptical community and 'science' has to say". He also relates that "Anybody can come up on the web and dispute what we do and recover but most don't know what is real and what is really out there........ Results are REAL science no matter who has what to say about it". He knows well what he is saying because there are some pretty high-test searches going on by people who are buying his equipment and they are finding things that "shouldn't be there" everyday.
At the time there are ongoing excavations involving Fitz and his location machines in Mexico, the Philippines, and here in the US which remain confidential. It is hoped that they will be able to come forth with their discoveries at some point in the future without contest from those who own the purse strings to the scientific community. As advanced technology continues to bring professional locating equipment such as Fitzgerald's to the public, more and more of us "little guys" are going to discover artifacts that Status-quo scientists won't be able or willing to identify, but word will get out. The process has already started.
As the general population becomes more and more aware that those at the top will debunk anything that violates their own purported theories or will steal rights to anything of value, we can only hope that archaeologists and explorers will follow the example of climatologists and break away from foundations which hold their own wealth and honors as having more value than the truth.

SOLAR STORMWATCH - EXCITING OPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH SOLAR SCIENTISTS
If you have followed our Earth Watch series over the years, you are pretty aware of our intense interest in the sun and its affect on the planet. We were talking about the sun when the avant garde would chirp politically correctly about CO2 only. Our thing isn't always the politically correct thing around here, but we sure do appreciate good, solid, logically based science - and we like the science of the sun. In fact, we are fascinated with the sun and just figured you might be, too, so we've got a really cool surprise here for all the sun worshipers out there reading this.
Scientists know that the activity of the sun, while not being the only factor, is the most predominant cause of global warming and cooling, and of space weather within our solar system in general. There is still a long way to go in the study of the sun, though. It's a big project and to get any real meaningful knowledge takes constant surveillance. Scientists have now created a system that will let anyone interested participate in the study.
No - you can't go look directly at the sun. But you can look at the slides of the sun that are being recorded for study. Two spacecrafts, Stereo Ahead and Stereo Behind, have been launched to collect sun data of the area between earth and the sun from a "fish eye" perspective. This data will help scientists understand how events on the sun determine global and space weather. Continuous filming of the sun is taking place and that is where the general public gets its chance to help with the study.
You can now enlist at http://solarstormwatch.com and view slide segments and record any activity you see in each slide. There is a tutorial that will tell you what you are looking for and how to record what you see. You have no obligations whatsoever. You might just want to try it out once and you might want to make it an ongoing hobby. Each person who takes an hour or two to watch the films and record their findings provides a valuable service for our scientists and aids in increasing our understanding of how our solar system works.
If you have ever felt you would like to be involved in scientific field work, even just to get a taste of what it was like, then this is your chance to be a true armchair scientist and promote REAL science and real knowledge. Who knows, you might be the first one to witness a previously unknown class of activity.

EARTHQUAKE WATCH
For those of you who missed it, the 2010, 1st Quarter Earthquake report is online on the Gazette:
THE WORLD'S NUMBER 1 ENVIRONMENTAL DANGER? DESERTIFICATION
Desertification of the earth's land masses in recent years has become a very real and life threatening situation. Each year more and more of our land is becoming desert. Each year the process accelerates. Debates rage about whether blame for warming can be placed on humans. Arguments have cited that trees are absorbing less CO2 but these arguments seem aimed at taking urgency from the issue of reforestation to a more profitable issue for our governments. The plain truth is, if reforestation does not start to take precedence very soon, desertification will soon become irreversible in now salvageable areas and is already irreversible in many areas. The statistics are shocking and need to be faced now.
The truth is also that humans are the major cause of desertification. As populations increase, the deforestation and tilling of land to use for crops and the increases. Populations of foraging livestocks are also increased. These animals, which in nature will drift from place to place are contained domestically in one area and are forced to completely deplete vegetation supplies. In many sectors of our globe populations of humans and foraging livestock have exceeded carrying capacities of the land. As the land becomes unusable, these populations migrate to other areas, many of which are already overloading the carrying capacity of their land.
Shrinking Lake Chad
As of the year 2000, China has been losing 1,400 square miles of land to desertification yearly. This figure is an increase of 800 square miles a year from figures drawn between the years of 1950 and 1975. 700,000 farmers in Mexico are being driven from their farmlands yearly, forcing other areas to absorb their populations of humans and livestock. In Nigeria where the human population has increased over 400% in the last 60 years and livestock populations are up by 1,100%, the country is facing a loss of 1,355 square miles of land per year to desertification.
In Afghanistan the sand dune belt along the Amu Darya River is increasing in size at the rate of 3 meters per day. In Yemen, where the population is 21 million, 97% of the land is now being stricken by various levels of desertification. In India 413, 000 square miles are now suffering the ravages of desertification. That is one third of their land mass - and the area grows daily.
In just 2002 alone 124 villages in Iran were buried in sand forcing the people and their livestock to migrate, necessitating other locations to absorb their populations
Statistics from the Rural Poverty Portal report that:
Each year an additional 20 million hectares of agricultural land either becomes too degraded for crop production, or becomes lost to urban sprawl. It is imperative that lands be reforested while there is still time to do so. Water in arid desert areas seeps into the ground initially where it absorbs saline and sulfur chemicals. The water then resurfaces eventually bringing the salt chemicals with it, producing salt desert conditions. Once this happens, the land is no longer retrievable from desertification. It is lost ground. In Africa : more than half of arable land lost.
It is estimated that desertification and drought account for a US $42 billion annual loss in food productivity worldwide. Nearly one third of the world's cropland has been abandoned in the past 40 years because erosion has made it unproductive. Loss of potential productivity due to soil erosion is estimated as equivalent to some 20 million tons of grain per year. Desertification is found to some degree on 30 per cent of irrigated lands, 47 per cent of rain-fed agricultural lands, and 73 per cent of rangelands. Annually, an estimated 1.5 to 2.5 million hectares of irrigated land, 3.5 to 4 million hectares of rain-fed agricultural land, and about 35 million hectares of rangeland lose all or part of their productivity due to land degradation.
Restoring soil lost by erosion is a slow process. It can take 500 years for 2.5 cm of soil to form.
Reforestation can be extremely difficult in areas that have already succumbed to desert conditions. Desert ground is hot and relatively void of organic matter which holds moisture necessary for the survival of plants. In Japan, piping cold water through desert ground areas to cool the soil is being considered. These pipes would cause condensation just as a cold glass of ice water does. Ground would also need to have organic matters reintroduced to them. Organic matter holds the moisture where it will not seep deep enough to resurface containing salts. It can also be used by plants which have been reintroduced to the area. We must start the process of reforestation of salvageable areas immediately while means are being developed to reforest land in larger quantities, however, if we are to make progress against land loss.
North Sahara. Anti-sand shields
As more land and livestock is necessary for use in feeding ever growing populations, the tilling and foraging of land will continue to accelerate the desertification of earth's land masses making reforestation an ever increasing battle of science against time. Desertification has a good head start on us.
Population control of humans and livestock is another factor that must be faced. This problem is particularly hard to deal with as many people of varied religious and cultural inclinations do not understand, or do not believe, that there is a problem. As ever-growing populations are forced to move as their lands become desert, the problem spreads. By the time ever increasing populations are willing to face over-population issues and begin to willingly work toward a humane solution of negative population growth of both humans and livestock, it could well be too late to reverse the crisis and mass famine will become inevitable. As areas, one by one, are pushed over carrying capacity, the issue will soon become unavoidable no matter what a group's philosophical viewpoints happen to be in our present time.
In some locations answers may be sought in less than humane solutions. China is often reviled for its present policies on negative population growth. In light of the alternative of mass famine and in regard to human refusal to limit family sizes, however, legislation on family size is a humane solution compared to mass famine that will result from exceeding carrying capacity of the land. Political crises may yet arise in areas with governments more willing to use genocidal oriented stances such as food distribution and pricing inequities when populations exceed carrying capacity. If we can not successfully reverse the desertification problem via willing effort to do so, nature will do it for us - and nature is not known for it's humanitarian disposition.
